WEEK 13: FINAL SUBMISSION PROJECT 3

ABOUT:

The two additional buildings I chose to base my concept model on were the Hypo Alpe- Adria Centre by Morphosis and Hurlien Beach Resort by BIG. Both architectures have similar links and concepts such as the use of uneven triangular and jagged shapes, integration with its environment, movement and skeletal structure.

The function of my building is residential apartments built in the future for those who survived the end of the human life in 2022.
Due to the change of landform and terrain, survivors are forced to live in apartments that are situated above bridges incase of future disasters.

In order to keep the concept of “integrating with the environment”, I decided to develop terrain in a canyon environment by using CryEngine3. Since my building has a very unique shape and form, I also decided to design the canyon with similar traits and form.

WEEK 11: PROGRESS / DRAFT

MATERIALS:

CRYENGINE ENVIRONMENT:

Basing on the comments made by Matt last week, I've decided to make my terrain much bigger and also making the shape more unique. Since my building is in an unique shape, Matt suggested that I should keep this concept and apply it to my valley. (The model imported is my concept model and not my actual building for project 3)

WEEK 10: SITING AND ADDITIONAL FORMAT. DRAFT OUTPUTS

After discussing with my tutor Matt, I have decided to place my building in a rocky and dry environment, such as the canyons. The canyon's textures and shape is similar to how my building is shaped in a jagged and unique structure, which emphasises the concept of "integrating with its environment".

CRYENGINE ENVIRONMENT SO FAR:

Might actually make the canyon even larger so then my building will stand out even more with it's wide structure across the cliffs....

TEST IMPORT 3DS MAX TO CRYENGINE

I'll place the structure in between the two cliffs (planning to make the cliff wider, so the building will be more effective and stand out more in the middle)

I thought my model had too much details to import, but fortunately it was able to import all of the details :)!!
Now I need to figure out how to import materials/ textures onto the building

  •  My building is going to be residential apartments in the future wrapped around a bridge across a canyon. Due to global warming, the world has changed drastically, leaving it into a deserted place. The model will become a city on its own, bringing life and movement within its environment. The types of user group that are going to inhabit this building, will be families- or everyone in general.
  • The additional technology that I am going to use is BuildAr. I can utilise BuildAr to unpack my layers (similar to project 2). I can show the different sections of the apartments as well as the circulation of the bridge with BuildAr.

WEEK 9 DESIGN DEVELOPMENT

SOME SKETCH IDEAS:

WEEK 6: PRECEDENT STUDY

BRIEF OUTLINE FOR PROJECT 1:

Basing on the building, Giant Interactive Group Cooperate Headquarters from Morphosis, For project 1 and 2 I focused on the concepts of movement, integrating with the environment, interlacing and grid structure. By unpacking these different ideas in my second project for BuildAr, I was able to express these ideas in a more comprehensive and technical way in the animation.

(A render from Project 2)

Some comments that my tutor, Matt Day made about my 3d model was that it reminded him of some sci-fi, alien like structure (eg, transformers), so for the project 3 I would like to keep these type of features and ideas for the building I will be designing.

2X PRECEDENT STUDIES AS A PAIR

MORPHOSIS
So I did some research in the break and I stumbled across Morphosis's other project called Hypo Alpe- Adria Centre located in Austria (1996-2001).

Integrating:
Although the structure is located in an area where it is surrounded by large carparks, residential suburbs, dislocated buildings and commercial developments, Hypo Alpe-Adria Centre subtly blends in with the sky with its grey-ish and blue colour design.

(Sci-fi, alien like features, similar to my model)

(sense of movment- the direction and light used)

BIG
 (Hua: Hurlien Beach Resort)

After discussing with Matt, I've decided to use BIG's Hua: Hurlien Beach Resort as my second choice of architect and architecture.
The Hau: Hurlien Beach Resort is a work in progress class beach resort by BIG in Hurlien, Taiwan. The site is located near the coast and the intersection of two river deltas.

Although it is still a work in progress architecture, I can already see similar links and concepts with my project 1. Similarities such as:

  • The use of uneven- triangular and jagged shapes
  • integration with its environment
  • grid like structure for the windows
  • sense of movement through the wave- like structure

3) DESIGN PROPOSAL

  • bridge between two mountains

The world’s highest and longest tunnel-to-tunnel suspension bridge was opened to traffic in March. Aizhai Bridge in Hunan province is 336 m (1,102 ft.) high and has a 1,176 m (3,858 ft.) span. It connects two traffic tunnels in the mountains, cutting the time needed to traverse the canyon beyond it from 30 minutes to 1.
  • The model becomes a city on its own- Apartments above the floor level, between two mountains, above a river/ ocean etc? (think about weather conditions, global warming- earthquakes, flooding)
  • Apartments and commercial developments/ bridge underneath the apartments
